Your hosts at Mokoia Downs Estate are Mick and Teresa. Mick was born and brought up in London, whilst Teresa grew up on a farm in the West of Ireland before coming to London to work in the mid 1970’s. Whilst bringing up our daughter, Katie, we pursued careers in education (Mick) and banking (Teresa) respectively, until, with Katie grown up and independent, we took a year out to travel around the world in 2004 and 2005.
Setting up and running a high quality, boutique bed and breakfast business represented the culmination of an idea that started to form nearly a decade ago, after our first visit to New Zealand in 2002. As a result, when we planned our year of traveling, we decided to spend over four months of it in New Zealand seeing as much of both North and South Island as possible.
By the end of that year we had both fallen in love with this beautiful country and decided that one day we would try to emigrate from the UK and establish a lifestyle B&B business here. We had been bowled over by the superb hospitality, accommodation and stunning natural beauty that we encountered everywhere we went, and had cherished the relaxed environments in which we met and formed friendships with both fellow travelers and hosts.
Whilst resuming our respective careers on our return to England in 2005, we simultaneously began to investigate the immigration process and look for (via the internet) the “ideal” property in which we would one day live and host visitors.
We were particularly drawn to Rotorua as it is a picturesque, vibrant and unique provincial city situated in the heart of majestic countryside dotted with beautiful lakes and forests. Since 1999 Rotorua has won the accolade of being New Zealand's most beautiful city on no less than 5 occasions, the most recent of which was in 2009. Rotorua is also at the heart of Maori culture in New Zealand, and it has a rich and fascinating history that has shaped the human as well as physical character of the area.
Our interests and hobbies include travel, books, music, sport, cinema, history, politics and gardening. We have extensive collections of books, music and movies, and as our guests you are welcome to browse and enjoy these during your stay with us. Should you find a book that you simply cannot put down but also cannot finish during your stay with us, then we are happy for you to borrow this and return it at some later point on your travels.
We hope that you choose to stay with us, and look forward to welcoming you to this beautiful and fascinating part of the world.
