More than just a B&B

With so many unique or unusual features Mokoia Downs is a unique B&B that offers memorable experiences rather than simply a place to stay.

The Library at Mokoia Downs

The Library

At the last count (!!) there were over 3,500 books in the library at Mokoia Downs, ranging from novels, short story collections, poetry, biographies, diaries, and books on History, Politics, Economics, Leadership, Travel, Sport, Journalism and the Performing Arts. In addition to a book swap section guests are welcome to borrow any book from the collection.

The Indie Cinema

Our decision to create a cinema at Mokoia Downs was inspired by spending many happy nights in quirky, independent cinemas all over New Zealand during a year of traveling in 2004-'05. The cinema has a microwave, fridge and tea and coffee making facilities, and guests can even make their own popcorn. Complimentary drinks can be served during movies on request.

Bar and Micro-Distillery

The Anglers Arms bar at Mokoia Downs provides an atmospheric venue for guests to enjoy a complimentary drink at the end of the day. A wide range of alcoholic and soft drinks are available, including the renowned "Mokoia Downs Moonshine" liqueurs, lovingly crafted by Mick in the on-site micro-distillery and made with organically grown fruit, herbs and spices from the garden.

Fresh produce at Mokoia Downs

Organic Garden

The organic fruit, vegetable and herb garden at Mokoia Downs provides healthy ingredients for guest breakfasts. In addition to 10 fruit trees, a wide range of berries are grown as well as vegetables and herbs. The flourishing garden is fertilised with our own compost and castings from our worm farm. The adjacent paddocks are home to our free-range hens.

Vintage Artifacts

With a vintage 1950's Europa petrol pump, a 1920's Challenge windmill from Batavia, Illinois, and agriculatural machinery from the 19th and early 20th century, Mokoia Downs exudes charm and character in a secluded setting, whilst offering modern comforts and facilities.

Swimming Pool

The solar heated swimming pool at Mokoia Downs is open from mid November until mid April. Large enough to swim for exercise, it is nevertheless small enough just to splash around and have fun in. The fenced area is shady and secluded, and an ideal place for guests to relax. The swimming pool has a changing area, and sun loungers are available for guest use.

A Farmstay Style Experience

With a growing collection of animals Mokoia Downs offers a farmstay style experience for guests. The menagerie includes donkeys, sheep, a miniature horse, hens, ducks and guinea pigs. Each morning guests can accompany Teresa on a nature trail, when they can feed and pet the animals, and even choose freshly laid eggs for breakfast.
